Summer Holidays 2020

One of the things we love most about summer holidays abroad is discovering the local cuisine: taking in the aromas and strange sights and sounds of a foreign food market and leisurely perusing restaurant menus before deciding on where to spend the evening. However unfortunately due to the circumstances most of us won’t be travelling to our favourite exotic destinations this summer and instead we’re stuck here.

We’re thinking the fresh salads of Greece full of plump olives, juicy tomatoes and salty feta, the intense heat of an authentic Thai curry and the rich luxurious-ness of traditional  French cuisine with Coq au Vin or Beef Bourguignon.

We’re Celebrating National Vegetarian Week!

This National Vegetarian Week we are celebrating the humble vegetable: from the new vegetarian and vegan biscuits from Cradoc’s Savoury Biscuits to Olive’s Kitchen’s frozen ready meals to our selection of vegetarian friendly cheeses and Delphi dips and salads, we’ve got everything you’ll need to enjoy National Vegetarian Week!

These new savoury biscuits are already proving a hit with our customers. A small, family business based in the Brecon Beacons, Cradoc’s have been baking their crisp biscuits for the last 10 years using only natural ingredients. The majority are suitable for vegans while some contain cheese and are vegetarian friendly. Flavours include Beetroot & Garlic: an attractive dusky pink cracker chilli, ginger and garlicflavoured with fragrant garlic and savoury beetroot with a delightful peppery finish (if you hadn’t guessed this is one of our favourites!), Chilli & Ginger: turmeric crackers with cumin, black pepper and nigella seeds combined with subtle red chillies and bold ginger flavours and Cheddar & Onion Chutney: golden baked crackers with pickled onions and sweet chutney mixed with traditional Cheddar. Olive’s Kitchen Frozen Meals
We love the ease and convenience of a frozen meal and the vegetarian varieties available are both satisfying and tasty whilst being packed full of healthy goodness. Olive’s Kitchen is made up of husband and wife team Charlie and Nikki Allhusen butternut_squash lasagnewho swapped running a successful deli for cooking homemade gourmet meals from their purpose built kitchen in Sherbourne, Dorset. The Butternut Squash lasagne is a classic favourite among both our customers and staff and it’s easy to see why. The roasted butternut squash is sweet and buttery with a creamy ricotta and spinach filling layered with fresh pasta and a tomato and basil sauce and finally topped with mozzarella and parmesan. The Aubergine Parmigiana is full of deliciously rich and more-ish flavours and combines grilled aubergines with a hearty tomato and basil sauce topped with a crisp mozzarella and parmesan crust. Delphi dips are the perfect accompaniment to a vegetarian feast, we love their Lemon & Coriander houmous with lightly spiced falafel or the red kidney bean salad mixed with peppers and sun-ripened tomatoes with olive oil, mint and mixed herbs for lunch, the crunchy coleslaw as part of a cheese ploughmans and the char-grilled vegetable cous cous as part of a Middle Eastern inspired dinner. Summer Dips from Delphi

The weather may have taken a turn for the worse this week but hopefully the sun will be returning very soon and we’ll be able to enjoy these delightful summer dips from Delphi Foods al fresco style.

Red pepper houmous

Established in 1984, Delphi Foods is a family run business specialising in dips, salads, olives and tapas made using the finest ingredients. We have been stocking their products for a long time and following recent introduction of new lines and vibrant new packaging they are really becoming a popular choice for a number of our customers.

Traditional dips include classic houmous, made with ground chickpeas, nutty tahini and lemon juice, refreshing tzatziki with cooling yogurt, chopped cucumber and mint and chunky guacamole made with avocado, coriander, lemon and a hint of chilli. Other dips in their range including smoky aubergine, classic taramasalata, Auberginesmooth tahini and a variety of flavoured houmous.

Their extensive salad range includes fluffy cous cous with smoky char-grilled vegetables, fresh edamame beans and sun-dried tomatoes with mixed herbs and hearty three bean salad with a mix of red kidney, borlotti and cannelloni beans marinated in olive oil and herbs. All of these salads are suitable for vegetarians and the majority are also vegan friendly making them a perfect addition for BBQ’s and al fresco parties this summer. They also travel well which makes them a great picnic staple.

National BBQ Week!

What could be better – it’s a bank holiday, it’s half term and it’s BBQ week!
First launched in the summer of 1997 to recognise the UK’s growing BBQ culture; this is a celebration of all things BBQ and the long way we’ve come from “if it isn’t burnt it’s not BBQ!” We’ve got some great BBQ ideas and although we can’t guarantee the weather, we can guarantee the delicious taste of these fantastic products – rain or shine!

Chinns was established in Crediton over forty years ago and today operates just around the corner from the original factory headed by husband and wife team Rose and Tony Palmer. Dips and Salads

Fish
Fish can be a delicious alternative to meat on the BBQ, whether mixed with fresh, zingy citrus flavours or lightly charred for delicious smokiness. We stock a range fishof fish including frozen cod fillets, smoked haddock and salmon fillets as well as fresh smoked mackerel, peppered mackerel, smoked trout and kippers from Jackson’s Fishmongers in Newton Abbot. Why not make a smoked trout salad with some new potatoes and rocket for a fresh BBQ twist or try some salmon fillets with a soy and ginger marinade wrapped in foil and BBQ-ed?
